Oryx

Picture
Tough . Light . Multiday
The Oryx has been design for multiday hiking in South Africa, whether it be full wilderness trails or overnighting in huts. The two sizes available (44 litre and 52 litre) have been carefully selected to strike a balance between having sufficient space for your gear and not encouraging over-packing. After all, the aim of lightweight backpacking is to take less, but without sacrificing safety or comfort. Having said that, we would be delighted to make a particular size for you if you need something different. This pack comes with removable aluminium struts inserted in internal sleeves which prevents torso collapse and improves comfort. These struts can be bent to fit you spine and improve ventilation. As far as we are aware, this is the lightest multiday pack available in South Africa, coming in at between 750g and 900g, depending on volume, hip belt size and features. It has a maximum comfortable carrying capacity of 12/13kg.

We can also supply the pack with heavy duty tubular frame to increase the carrying capacity to 17kg. It adds approximately 70g to the pack depending on torso length.

Technical details

  • Main pack material: 420D ripstop Nylon with Polyurethane coating (175 g/m2)
  • Stretch pockets: Heavy duty spandex (20%) / nylon (80%)
  • YKK buckles and ladder locks
  • EVA 45  closed cell foam with high memory in hip belt
  • Combination of EVA 45 and softer EVA33 closed cell foam (laminated) with high memory for shoulder straps
  • Stitching: Core spun polyester thread with 22.4N tensile strength. 10 stitches per inch, double stitching on pack seams, flats felled seam on front panel to improve water resistance
  • Total pack weight varying between 750g and 850g (excl. optional extras). Hip belt size has a big impact on overall pack weight.
  • 44l Pack Volume: Internal 40 l + external pocket (up to 4 l) = 44 l, water bottle pockets volume (1.5 l each) excluded
  • 52l Pack Volume: Internal 47 l + external pocket (up to 5 l) = 52 l, water bottle pockets volume (1.5 l each) excluded
  • NOTE: Pack volumes may appear small, but the pack retains stiffness and comfort by packing the pack full. Thus the design intention is that one doesn't have spare space in the pack below the shoulder strap. Variable space is achieved with the roll top closure.
  • This is the true volume of the pack and should not  necessarily be compared with big brand backpack volumes. In many cases the volumes stated by some brands are, shall we say, optimistic.
